Why Does It Hurt When I Chew?
If you're experiencing pain or discomfort while eating, an underlying condition likely needs attention. This is especially concerning if the discomfort is chronic and persistent. Fortunately, many of these issues are highly treatable. Below, we explore common causes of chewing discomfort and the treatment options available to help you regain your comfort and gum health.
What causes painful or uncomfortable eating?
Experiencing pain while eating can affect your quality of life. Common causes include sensitive teeth, where worn enamel exposes nerves and causes pain with hot, cold, or acidic foods; worn teeth, where grinding can misalign your bite and make chewing painful; and gum disease, where inflamed gums lead to significant discomfort while chewing.
Why is my tooth sensitive to hot and cold?
Worn enamel exposes the nerves inside the tooth, which is why the pain arrives with something hot, cold, or acidic and fades once it is gone. Hot sensitivity and cold sensitivity often point at different things, and which one you have changes what we look for at the exam.
How do I stop tooth nerve pain?
Nerve pain means the problem has reached the inside of the tooth, and it does not resolve on its own. Call the office the same day. We keep time open for patients in pain, and getting you comfortable comes before any conversation about longer-term treatment.
When should I be seen right away?
Persistent gum pain or swelling, chronic bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth, sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods, loose teeth or receding gums, and discomfort while chewing are all worth a look. Don't ignore these signs. Early intervention can prevent more severe dental issues.
